Thai History is broadly categorized into the Lanna period, Ayuthaya period and Modern Thailand. These terms refer to the time when these kingdoms played a major role in uniting what is now Thailand. It was called Siam earlier. The most famous king of the Ayuthaya period was King Naresuan. He was held as a hostage by the Burmese for several years. Upon his return, the young king raised an army and drove the Burmese back to Burma. He beheaded the Burmese prince in a battle. King Naresuan was thought to have been born in Phitsanulok. He is a national icon who united Thailand and is a revered Thai king. There are many Thai movies depicting his story.
