This year India emerged as the top rice exporter in the world. It exports two main varieties of rice. Basmati rice and non-Basmati rice. This year 2020 saw an increase of 15% in value terms over the last year. It could go up to about 42% higher than last year. In 2019 India exported 4.71 billion dollars worth of Basmati rice and 6.73 billion dollars of non-basmati rice. This is higher than the export of rice from Thailand, which is currently the second largest exporter of rice in the world. Thailand exported 2.4 billion dollars worth in 2020. This figure for Thailand is for all varieties of rice exported.
How did India export more rice?
The reasons for increase in India’s exports in a bumper crop. There was a good harvest in India while drought affected Thailand’s rice production. Another important factor is pricing. India has an edge over Thailand in terms of prices. Indian prices are about 30% lower than the price quoted by Thailand for it’s rice in international markets. Thailand does not export Basmati rice.
